In Pinellas County, Florida, a pet sitter has been arrested after stuffing seven cats in a suitcase and plastic bin and dumping them at the SPCA.

According to the Tampa Free Press, authorities stated the cats were left in this state by a pet sitter who apparently grew tired of caring for them. When employees opened the bin, five of the cats had died, and two of the cats were in critical condition. One of the cats had to be euthanized. The only surviving cat had an internal temperature at 106 Fahrenheit. His condition is not known.

There were no airholes in either of the containers. Both the bin and the suitcase where the cats were held captive were found with urine and feces inside, indicating the cats were alive when stuffed into the containers with no food or water.

Ian Bender, 37, was supposedly taking care of the cats while the owner had been on a business trip. The cats were all under the age of 18 months, and at the time they were left with Bender were healthy. Bender had been caring for the cats about a week and a half when he decided he was sick of caring for them and decided to surrender the pets to the shelter. He placed the cats in the bin and the suitcase; telling authorities he didn’t have any carriers.

Bender faces seven counts of animal cruelty. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on March 28, 2024. Later in the day, he was released on recognizance.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership. When selecting a pet sitter, it’s crucial to conduct thorough research and ensure they have the experience and temperament to handle your furry companions.

Here are some tips for choosing a responsible pet sitter:

  • Ask for references: Talk to friends, family, or neighbors who have used pet sitters in the past.
  • Request a meet-and-greet: Before leaving your pet in someone else’s care, schedule a meeting to ensure they feel comfortable with your pet and your home.
  • Inquire about experience: Look for a pet sitter who has experience caring for animals similar to yours.
  • Discuss expectations: Clearly communicate your expectations for the pet sitter, including feeding schedules, litter box maintenance, and playtime.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure your pet has a safe and happy experience while you’re away.
