UPDATE: Abused puppy suffering from trauma and broken legs slowly healing

In Hagerstown, Maryland, a 13-week-old long-coat Dalmatian puppy had been scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday on both of her legs after having allegedly received “devastating injuries” at the hands of a local man. The x-rays, however revealed the puppy’s injuries to be more severe than the original radiographs the night she arrived at the emergency animal hospital.

In order to offer the puppy the best chance at a comfortable and pain free life as she grows up, it has been decided to amputate Bijou’s front leg which will be performed early next week. Her other broken leg, in the back took more than five hours to repair, but now she is one step closer to making a recovery.

 The Humane Society of Washington County reports the puppy remains in stable condition.

On Tuesday, Washington County deputies and humane society officers responded to a report from the Mountain View Animal Emergency Hospital about a suspected animal abuse situation. A woman had contacted the animal hospital because her puppy had been non-responsive after she arrived home. The woman and her boyfriend brought the puppy to the emergency veterinarian where x-rays were performed.

During the exam, it was noted the puppy had suffered severe trauma to her head and two broken legs; reports from the hospital indicated the injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma. The head veterinarian at the hospital also stated that the puppy’s injuries were consistent with dogs struck by vehicles, and it would have to have been extreme force to ultimately cause such horrific injuries.

The Humane Society of Washington County wants to thank their readers and supporters for all the encouraging sentiments and donations towards Bijou’s medical needs. To date, her medical bills have exceeded $8,000 and donations of $8,890 have been received. It is also noteworthy to mention how local veterinary friends have donated time and resources to lower the shelter’s costs tied to this puppy’s case.

Michael W. Snyder, 24, has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty. He has been released from jail on recognizance with special conditions; he must stay at his mother’s home and not be in the presence of any animals. Any dogs currently at his mother’s home are to be kept some place else.
