Three huskies – Jeanette, Alvin and Simon are about to be euthanized at the Manhattan shelter of New York City Animal Care Centers. The three dogs were never walked by their owner, lived most of their lives in crates, and lived with their owner in an isolated environment.

Tragically, the dogs were found with their deceased owner; the landlord in the building surrendered the dogs to the shelter. The dogs have not been socialized and have no idea what to expect from these strangers as well as the noisy and scary shelter where they have been brought and waiting for help.

It is not very fair to Alvin, Jeanette, and Simon, whose lives are on the line!

Jeanette, who’s 8, is fearful and anxious. She did take treats gently through the bars. She is not showing any aggression towards anyone, but she panics when anyone tries to walk her! She does not know what is going on, and has never been leashed or walked. She’s never been out in the sunshine or knows what fresh air is! What do they expect? Can you blame her?

Jeanette, 8, arrived at the shelter on April 10 with Simon and Alvin, and at the time she was fearful, panicky, thrashing and flailing. Days later, she howled at the front of her kennel, but would take treats very gently from the handler. As soon as the handler walked away, Jeannette started to howl again.

The behavior department at the shelter recommends Jeanette, Simon and Alvin all be placed with New Hope placement with adults only. They need force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a behaviorist or professional trainer.

Jeanette 168685 weighs 58 pounds and is eight-years-old.

Alvin, 5, has no leash experience and when attempting to leash him, he panicked. His muscles are wasting away, and he has not been groomed. At intake, he was calm but panting. He eats treats gently and stayed on his bed with a soft body. When he was approached, he gave a brief tail wag and took treats gently. Due to not being socialized or walked, or ever leaving the house he shared with his parents (Jeanette and Simon), as well as his human parent, he panics. He doesn’t know what’s going on.

Alvin 168683 weighs 55 pounds and is five-years-old.

Simon is reported to have been fearful, panicking, flailing, and whining when attempts were made to leash or walk him. Simon appeared soft-bodied when approached in kennel, however upon the leash being placed on him, he panicked, he flailed backward, and would not approach forward or exit the kennel. Due to concern for overall stress levels, he was not a candidate for a handling assessment.

Simon 168684 weighs 55 pounds and is five-years-old.
