Nearly two weeks ago, Niko was found abandoned late at night in Atascocita, Texas shivering in a parking lot. A Good Samaritan had been in the right place at the right time; she took him home and posted for rescue help. Niko was extremely skinny, and cowered when petted.

It was ThisIsHouston who stepped up to help, and since then Niko has been making remarkable progress with his recovery, and of course, has become an all time favorite of animal advocates everywhere.

When he arrived, Niko only weighed 15 pounds; he should be at least double that weight. He’s estimated to be about two years of age, had a tail broken in two different spots, and has such a severe underbite that will need frequent dentals. Even though he is scared of people, despite all he must have been through and all that’s going on with him, he’s a super sweet boy who loves cuddles.

Check out his brief video:

He’s been doing well minus having some diarrhea and straining issues which we believe lead to paraphimosis (inability to reduce the penis and it remains exposed), so back to the vet he went to get that corrected. He was monitored for the day, but if it happens again, he will need to undergo surgery. He started new meds + food for his diarrhea so we’re hoping that issue is resolved soon.

Facebook update

So far, Niko has gained slightly over a pound and still needs quite a bit of weight to start feeling better. Meanwhile, volunteers and staff marvel at his great spirits, and he is absolutely adorable.

it’s crazy what you can find discarded and neglected on the streets.

Niko’s story isn’t unique. It’s not surprising to see dogs in his condition, but stories like this remain a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.

Only the best here on out, Niko
