In Cleveland, Texas, a nursing mother had been hit by a car and seriously injured on Thursday. Rather than giving up, she dragged herself into a ditch and waited. A strong storm passed through the area, but she was not able to move. Was she going to die in that ditch, or would that miracle happen and someone would come to help her?
A Good Samaritan had spotted her and shared her photos on social media. Who could help? After all, rescues are overcrowded and the costs needed to help the injured, starved and abused are staggering. Still ThisIsHouston stepped forward.
Volunteers arrived at the location and immediately took control. Now given a name and identity as MacKenzie, the dog was rushed to the emergency veterinarian hospital. Upon arrival, her blood pressure was very low, and she was administered intravenous fluids. She also has a heart murmur, and more tests have been ongoing.
MacKenzie remains in stable condition and is resting comfortably, however her struggles and recovery will be an uphill challenge. She has been diagnosed with multiple fractures in her pelvis, gas in her abdomen and a fracture near the base of her tail. Her tail appears to be completely detached from the rest of her spine. She has also been diagnosed with air under her skin near her pelvis.
A CT scan will determine what can be surgically repaired, and it is likely she will need several operations to try and repair the heartbreaking damage. Additionally, her bladder appears to be fairly large and veterinarians are concerned if she can urinate on her own. At this time, there doesn’t seem to be any free fluid via her ultrasound, however she was dehydrated when she arrived, and it is possible she will have fluid buildup in her abdomen.
MacKenzie will be having a surgical evaluation today to determine what can be done; meanwhile everyone is trying to stay hopeful.
As for the puppies, a team of volunteers including the person who found MacKenzie, have returned to the area and are searching for her puppies. Sadly, one puppy was reported to have been hit by a car yesterday, but it is thought there still might be two or three tiny survivors.
It is heartbreaking to realize the tragedy these innocent dogs have had to endure, but MacKenzie is safe and every avenue is being employed to find the puppies.
