Barely one day into the New Year 2023, Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Chief Life Saving Officer Donna Lochmann and her team had been checking on another dog when they arrived at a traffic buildup on Highway 70. A group of people had been gathered around a dog who had been been struck on the road; his loyal canine friend had remained by the critically injured dog and barked.

Rescuers immediately sprang into action and carefully placed the injured dog, along with his friend, into their vehicle and rushed him to the veterinarian trauma center.

His friend is so worried; she’s breaking our heart.

Everyone wished and wished for a miracle. Her rescuers named her Heart and the injured dog was named Soul; he was sedated and x-rays were done. Sadly, his back was broken, and he was not able to be fixed. It was decided to give Heart the time she needed to say goodbye to her friend, as he was still sedated and not in pain.

Heart fell asleep on Soul. Everyone grieved with her; the love, the loyalty, and the sadness dug deep into hearts.

We are going to get her a little pendant to wear on her collar with some of his ashes so she can always carry him with her. To everyone who lost a dear friend or family member this year, we are so sorry.
