More than a dozen bison were killed near the entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Montana on Wednesday after they were struck by a semi-truck. According to the West Yellowstone Police Department, the accident occurred on Highway 191 where bison often can be found “near paved roadways and snowmobile trails due to these areas being easier for them to travel.”

A press release on Facebook, posted by the police department, stated the bison in those particular areas are often in the path of vehicles and are struck and killed on a regular basis. The bison were initially thought to have been hit by a semi truck and two private passenger vehicles, but police later explained the two private vehicles had been involved in another collision.

Sadly, some of the bison had to be euthanized due to their serious injuries.

We deal with wildlife being struck and killed on the roadways in our area on a regular basis due to the abundance of wildlife in our area and our close proximity to Yellowstone National Park. We are always saddened by any of these incidents, particularly when so many animals are lost.

It is not known if speed had been a factor in the crash, but isn’t it good sense to slow down in an area with lots of wildlife and accompanied by inclement weather? The Montana Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accidents.

Rest in peace wild animals. We are sorry humans have let you down.
