In La Puente, California, by Sunday afternoon temperatures had already climbed to over 90 degrees, when rescuer Suzette Hall was asked to help a young shepherd wandering for weeks trying her best to survive in almost impossible conditions.

The dog had been spotted standing on a hillside, and the heat had no doubt exhausted her leaving her panting heavily. At first, the Good Samaritan who saw her, initially thought she was a coyote, but soon realized this was the same stray dog that had been posted on the Nextdoor app for more than two weeks.

As Suzette arrived and surveyed the area, she was unsure how she would even be able to approach the dog high on the hillside much less set a humane trap to capture her. Kind neighbors, however allowed Hall and the volunteers to access their yards from the hill’s side. It was still very far, but there was no giving up – trying to rescue a dog in dire need.

Finally the trap was carried to the last area where the dog had taken refuge from the sun and the maddening heat. She wasn’t going to make capture easy – that was for sure, but she did drink the water next to the trap. In spite of the hours and hours it seemed to take for the dog to get closer, Suzette had another idea.

I tried everything and finally I went to get a rotisserie chicken. I had been alone and my dear friend Mary said I am coming to help you. I was beyond happy and thankful. It started to cool down; she actually started to wag her tail when she would see me coming but still too skittish to come to me. I put the chicken in trhe tap. And started to walk away … I heard the trap shut. I turned around and started crying.

This was such a hard rescue because of the location she was in. So I was exhausted and hot and I couldn’t hold back my emotions.

The women were both physically exhausted and would not be able to carry the dog in the trap back to their vehicle. The fire department was called, and they came to the rescue and carried the trap up the hill.

… Just a puppy who is skinny, hungry and happy to have been rescued. Meet Sunshine.
