A polar bear cub seemed to have sought help from humans after her mouth became stuck in a tin can and she couldn’t eat. Slowly the one-year-old cub had been starving to death; that is until a specialty team from the Moscow Zoo arrived in the Arctic to save her life.
According to SkyNews, residents of Dikson spotted the female polar bear wandering up and down the huts where humans lived as if trying to find some help. The can appeared to have been lodged deep in her mouth and even though one resident tried to take it out of her mouth, it was in too deep and too painful, and not feasible for her to even try and expel it by rubbing her face.
A team from the Moscow Zoo flew more than 2,100 miles to the outpost and were able to capture and sedate her in order to remove the can with a pair of pliers. It was then very important to make sure the polar bear recovered from the general anesthesia. The team left fish nearby so that when she awakened she would finally be able to eat.
Although the polar bear had become emaciated from not being able to eat, veterinarians expect her to recover. She is being confined until rescuers are sure she can be released back into the wild.
