UPDATE: Paralyzed pup who spent 2 days ducking train on railroad tracks continues fight for life

In Philadelphia, an animal rescue group saved an injured dog late last week who had been left lying on railroad tracks for two days. According to the Philly Rescue Angels, the dog, now dubbed Lucky, was found at the Lawndale Station in Montgomery County and was unable to use his back legs.

Lucky was there for 2 days, we were NOT aware of that until we got to him and the was TOLD he was there for 2 days. We got to lucky at 4:19pm, we are in daylight savings, the sunsets around 4:30pm, that’s why there are photos of him in daylight and night time. Upon seeing him, we suspected a spinal injury, which needs to be handled properly or it can be FATAL. We called for help so he could be safely transported to PENN, he was on his way to PENN by 5:28pm. We did this in under an hour, while we fed and comforted him & saved his life.

The dog had been lying on the tracks and ducked his head way down as the train ran overhead. His collar and leash were found nearby. It is not known if Lucky had been injured before having been left on the tracks or if the train had struck him.

On Friday, Lucky underwent surgery and is expected to remain in the critical care section of the veterinary hospital for a week. His prognosis is a bit more optimistic, however tomorrow is never guaranteed.

This morning, at 10:30AM Lucky was brought into surgery. He received an extensive, 6 hour long spinal surgery. We are ecstatic to let you all know that he made it through surgery, & is finally resting. Lucky has received two plates along his spine, & has been given injectable antibiotics. Lucky now will be closely monitored for the next few days in the ICU. They will be keeping him comfortable, & controlling his pain daily. He is not yet out of the woods, but the vets have stated he is doing well, & is not in any pain at this time

Lucky is currently being made very comfortable and is receiving injectable pain medication as needed. He is eating which is a positive sign. Lucky remains at risk for developing Myelomalacia, which is fatal and occurs as a result of a severe spinal chord injury. Myelomalacia is when there is an impaired blood supply to the spinal cord.
