A scared, homeless dog shocked everyone last week when he leapt over the side of the interstate and fell off the 20-foot overpass before hitting the sidewalk below. Miraculously, the dog survived the fall.
The Kentucky Humane Society stepped up to help the dog after his family never showed up, and he was released from the mandatory stray hold at Louisville Metro Animal Services. The 100-pound St. Bernard, now named Ludwig Van Beethoven, arrived seemingly in a lot of pain. After x-rays were taken, it was found he suffered from a broken femur and three broken metacarpal bones that required surgical repair.
Ludwig did well through surgery, and on Saturday he moved over to his foster home – one of the vet technicians from the emergency hospital where he underwent surgery volunteered.
We’re thrilled! His foster mom says he is acclimating to the home nicely and is getting around pretty well for a dog who just had surgery to repair a broken femur! A big thank you to his foster mom for the update and the great photos. We love seeing him so relaxed and at home. We’ll post more updates as we get them but everyone please say a big thank you to his awesome foster mama for taking care of him!
While under sedation, the veterinary hospital took more x-rays of the three broken metacarpals in his foot and decided not to perform surgery on his foot. Instead it will be splinted for a couple of months and he will have frequent check ups during that time to ensure the foot is healing on its own.

Everyone falls in love with this boy as soon as they meet him. Although there have been many kind people reaching out to adopt him, Ludwig will require several weeks to heal before he can be ready for adoption. Please note, foster homes always get first choice at adoption options, and we are sure everyone understands.

Very happy that this precious treasure is in a wonderful foster home!!! I hope he recovers ASAP!!! He looks like a “cared for dog” vs. a neglected dog.
