At the Knox County Humane Society, Sandy gets tucked into bed every night. The 10-year-old senior has been at the shelter in Galesburg for nearly a year after she was surrendered when her owner became ill and had to move.

In just a few short weeks, it will hit a year since Sandy has been back at the shelter. She was left behind during the pandemic after her owner unfortunately became sick and had to relocate. Since being here, Sandy has picked up the routine of getting tucked in every night. It is something that has became an almost every night thing that she looks forward to. Although we love Sandy so much, our dream is for her to have her own forever home where she’d get tucked in every nigh

So every night, Sandy jumps into her favorite chair – nice and soft of course, and from there she is tenderly wrapped in blankets from the shelter staff and volunteers. The staff member, Keneshia Martin, who has taken the adorable photos, is usually the one, however to tuck the dog in at night. More than likely, her previous family had done that for her, and it does make Sandy feel a bit more secure.

Sandy is described as a very sweet dog who loves everyone, although her sweetness seems to have stopped short on cats. She does love car rides and would make a wonderful companion for someone.

Sadly, it is very difficult to find homes for senior dogs – everyone seems to want a puppy, but we have lots of things for a would be adopting family to consider when adopting an older dog. First of all, it is likely the affectionate senior is already house trained, won’t chew your favorite shoes and oh my – the molding and the money you will save by not having to replace one of a puppy’s favorite places to chew can really add up. Older dogs often know their commands, can delight you with their tricks, and never underestimate the slightest tilt of their heads as you try to explain to tell them how awful your day had been. Chances are they will even wag their tail – and we know – they are telling you it will all be fine as long as you pet them, love them and stay close.

Although everyone at the no kill shelter loves Sandy very much, having her own home with her very own human will make everyone happy!
