Rescue pooch undergoes cataract surgery and a whole new world has opened up for him

A four-year-old rescued Pomeranian blend never could see very well, but how would he know his eyesight had been limited? It’s not as if Luca went to school and sat in the back row and couldn’t see the numbers displayed in front of the classroom.

Luca had been a stray at the New York City Animal Care Centers and was adopted by Katie Schneller. Katie fell in love with Luca, and even though the little one-year-old had been displaying some anxiety and had a profound vision loss, Katie assured everyone she was up for the challenge.

Sadly, Luca’s eyesight continued to deteriorate; the poor pooch would often bump into things, and when one accident led to a visit with the vet a few years later, Katie decided it was time to do something. The surgical procedure was scheduled.

Surgery went well, and days later the miraculous changes started to occur.

I love that his reaction is to just sit and look at how beautiful everything is. So much to see!

He’s like “hmmmmmmmm. Interesting. Yes. I see what I imagine are sticks, lemme just jot that down for later. Ahh yes I see water, I’ll play in that in a few minutes. Hmmm yes yes this is acceptable”

“Would you look at that”

And although Luca had to wear the “cone of shame,” accompanied by a screen cover to protect his eyes from the sun and scratching, the dog seems perfectly content to sit and just look around.

Cataract surgery for dogs has become very popular and has a success rate of 95% for dogs to regain their eyesight after a few days of recovery.

It was a tough decision as it was really expensive and the aftercare is a pretty intense schedule, and I HATE seeing him in pain. But today, getting to watch him see his world and seem like he was absolutely enthralled has made it all worth it.
