In the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, for months dozens of people saw this nameless dog barely surviving on the streets, but no one stopped to help. Sadly, his story wasn’t unique, but every life is special, and when a Good Samaritan spotted him and asked rescuer Leslie Hennings if she could help share his story to find help, this poor guy’s plight brought tears to our eyes.

He’s slowly dying. With a broken jaw. A million people have seen him. Slowly dying. Feeling sad for him. He’s still there. Suffering on his own. A second of sadness for him doesn’t alleviate his pain. A second of ‘I’m sorry’ doesn’t make him feel better…

For more than a week, and after 5,700 shares on social media from friends, family and rescuers, the dog’s story made it over to Road to Home Rescue Support, and although they were not prepared to take on additional medical costs, founder Elyse Giurco, would not look the other way.

Now named Pickles, he is no longer nameless and no longer will be scrounging for food and be one of the many who succumb to their injuries, starvation and sickness on the streets. Pickles was transported to an emergency veterinarian in San Antonio.

It was thought the dog had a broken jaw, but fortunately his jaw is intact. He has numerous old injuries after having been hit by a vehicle, and the impact to his head likely knocked out all of his lower teeth and some upper ones also. Pickles also suffers from a fractured pelvis, and has been living with this painful injury for at least six-months.

Pickles is currently on pain medication and will be heading to New York where he will meet with an orthopedic surgeon and undergo oral surgery to remove any loose teeth.

His medical treatment will be costly, and we rely on our supporters in order to help dogs like Pickles. If you are interested in opening your heart to foster or give Pickles what is most likely the first home he has ever had, please email [email protected] or message our page.
