Nearly two dozen dogs are now in the care of a Boston, Massachusetts, animal shelter after they were surrendered by their former owner, who had fallen on hard times. According to MassLive, some of the 23 mixed breed dogs had been living in a shed after their owners lost their home and were “desperate” to keep a roof over their heads.

MSPCA-Angell is now caring for the Yorkie-Chihuahua mixes and they have stated that they expect the dogs to be made available for adoption soon. On Wednesday, the animal welfare agency said:

The dogs’ previous owners fell on hard times and lost their home. Realizing the situation was untenable, they reached out to us for help. The dogs are in fine overall health, and they range in age from one to sixteen years. The dogs are expected to become available for adoption in the coming days, and we will update you as soon as they are ready!

The dogs are said to be undersocialized and most will need “very patient” new owners.
