A resident of Mariupol and his puppy walked for five days from the port city in the east to safety in Zaporizhzhia. Liudmyla Shvaika shared the man’s story on Facebook. The man, wanting to escape had no idea at the time how dangerous conditions had become and if he and his dog would even be able to survive the 126 mile journey.

They left Mariupol at their own risk, as they had no idea what the situation was in the rest of the regious, and whether they would be able to cover such a distance on their feet and paws.

The two were tormented by bad weather, multiple Russian checkpoints and periodic shelling not far from where they tried to take cover. When the puppy, Zhuzha became exhausted from walking, his owner, Ihor carried the dog in his arms. Luckily they were able to find water along the way.

… (pup) I’m sure she is. They lived in Mariupol for two months without food and water. It’s highly possible that the owner did not have enough to feed her. Then, I’m sure her anxiety was off the roof with the constant noise of shelling and missiles hitting buildings. We also don’t know the state of their home there. Then, they spent five days walking, under shelling, and again, without much food and water I’m sure.

According to Ukrayinska Pravda and Yahoo News, the two arrived at the Ukrainian checkpoint where they rested. The man is said to have stood in front of a mirror and stated he felt at home; his hands had been blackened with dust and dirt.

The pup’s health has been stabilized. She has been eating and treated for parasites. Sadly, her paws are still painful after she wore out the pads traveling the route to safety.

Her owner can not believe that he has made it. That he managed. That he trusted his intuition. That they survived. That they’re safe. That there are people who welcomed them as their kin.
