An early morning fire at a Georgetown, Kentucky, barn claimed the life of dozens of animals. According to Fox Lexington, cats, dogs, and 25 horses died when a barn at Brannon Stables. By the time the fire crews arrived, the barn had burned to the ground.

Though the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, it is surmised that the barn was struck by lightning. Radar showed lightning strikes in the area between 1 and 4 a.m.

People familiar with Brannon Stables have expressed grief over the tremendous loss. Kayla Mack made a post to Facebook after she learned the devastating news:

I dropped to the floor in tears when I heard the news. Although I wasn’t at Brannon Stables anymore it will always be a place that I hold dear to my heart. I made so many friends while there but it’s also where I met Fish. Fish was an amazing horse and was the horse I showed for my first year as an amateur. He made me into a better rider and gave me that true big show horse experience. He was the biggest love bug and always gave 110% in the ring.

Adding:

My heart breaks for the other families grieving and trying to wrap their heads around this. This is horrible and something I never expected to hit so close to home. My heart is with Nancy, John, and Marie. This barn was their home and their life. My heart is also with each and every single person that walked through those doors. Please keep everyone in your prayers as there is a long road to recovery here.
