On Sunday afternoon, 286 dogs and cats from the Kabul Small Animal Rescue were boarded on a plane for new homes in the United States and Canada. Charlotte Maxwell-Jones and her team had been working for months to help these animals all get to safety.

On Wednesday night, they arrived in Vancouver, thanks to the joint efforts of volunteers, rescue organizations from the United States and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International. There were 158 dogs and 146 cats arriving on a converted Russian Ilyushin 76-TD plane after stops in Turkey and Iceland in order to check on the animals and refuel.

According to the Vancouver News, the flight to safety had to be rerouted at the last minute because of the conflict currently going on in Russia. The dogs and cats will be transferred to a specially constructed 17,000+ facility. About 70 of the animals are being reunited with their owners, and another two dozen will stay with the SPCA until their owners are able to be reunited with them. The others will be made available for adoption across North America.

#MissionPossible Reunion 💕There was not one dry eye in sight during yesterday’s reunion. We are honored to have reunited this Afghan refugee family with two of their cats. Back in Kabul, this family of animal lovers was dedicated to rescuing strays. It broke their hearts to have to leave them behind. Now, they will once again get to be together. This is one heartwarming reunion we will never forget.

Applications will be handled by SPCA International and the B.C.-based RainCoast Dog Rescue Society.

  1. So happy some were re-united with their owners. It must have been so hard to leave their fur babies behind. I wish the video had shown them being re-united.

  2. So happy to hear they finally got them out of that place & some reunited with their owners. Hopefully the military dogs that were there as well as the contracting company dogs were brought back, too.
