Over the weekend, a three-year-old sweet shepherd was surrendered to the care of ThisIsHouston, a non profit animal rescue organization. It is believed a man threatening dogs around the neighborhood where he lived, had slashed the shepherd along the side of his face and partially down his neck.

The dog, named Steve, had been suffering for days before finding the help he needed. His owner surrendered the dog on Saturday to the rescue group because he could not afford the medical bills, even though the first reaction after seeing the dog was to humanely euthanize him.

Surgeons at the Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinarian Hospital, however were optimistic about the dog’s recovery, and on Wednesday the medical staff closed up the dog’s deep injuries. His surgery was a heartwarming success!

He remains in good spirits even after the lengthy procedure to repair half his face. He woke up wanting to eat and he ate well. He even ate some of his meds orally, so they’re thinking he can transition to all oral meds soon.

And while Steve’s face looks really good now and the surgeons remain optimistic, there is always caution as to possible infections. It is hoped the bad days are all behind him, and we look forward to more updates as Steve’s true personality develops.

Many thanks to everyone.
