In Queensland and New South Wales, thousands of homes were lost to severe flooding in late February. Homes, people and their pets were all affected – some of the victims tragically lost their lives, and some were lucky enough to have been rescued.
According to 9News, a bull Mastiff named Winnie managed to survive the deadly running floodwaters, but ended up high in a tree. She had become tangled in the branches and vines and was unable to move. Her rear leg had become stuck, and there was no way for her to escape. Her circulation in her legs had been greatly reduced, and from there her front legs and her head swelled up with fluid. For three days she waited in the tree as death seemed closer.
When rescuers arrived, they weren’t even sure it was a dog tangled up in the tree. A Fire and Rescue NSW crew member borrowed a kayak and paddled to the tree to get Winnie down. Slowly and gingerly, the men cut Winnie out of the tree. One fireman described her as “black, sludgy and oil covered.”
Once freed, Winnie was rushed to a veterinarian hospital where her initial diagnosis seemed bleak. Her rear leg had become gangrenous, and there was no other solution than to amputate the limb.
And as a testament to the amazing resilience of this dog, she survived and has learned to walk being a tripod. She has since been reunited with her family.
