In Vadodara, India, a resident of Macchipeeth was arrested on Friday for brutally thrashing a stray dog and then dragging the defenseless animal behind his scooter for nearly a quarter of a mile. Ejaz Sheikh, 28, was taken from his home and jailed after an animal rescuer called the police and filed a complaint late Thursday night.
According to the Times of India, an animal welfare worker for the city was notified about an injured stray dog lying on the road suffering from grievous injuries on his head and other parts of his body. The man rushed the dog to a veterinarian hospital where he remains in critical condition with open wounds and broken teeth.
Reports from bystanders contend they witnessed Sheikh tie the dog with a belt and repeatedly hit it. He then tied the dog to his scooter and dragged it until he arrived near his home and then threw the dog off the road.
It is not known why Sheikh attacked the stray who has been a popular, friendly pooch neighbors had been feeding for years.
Sheikh faces animal cruelty charges under the Animal Welfare Act.
