In eastern Russia, near the border of China, poachers shot a rare Amur tiger, also known as a Siberian tiger, dead this week. Reports that the cat’s head and paws had been cut off, likely meant the tiger was used to make Chinese medicines or aphrodisiacs.
In traditional Chinese society, the strength and size of the tigers have led to the belief that the animals possess magical powers, and by eating parts of the animals, men would become stronger, healthier and increase or improve their sexual prowess.
According to The Daily Star, the cat named Pavlik, one of the largest and most endangered tigers in the world, had been rescued as a cub and raised to survive in the wild. Last year, he was released back into the wild. His collar was recovered by the GPS signal his killers cut off.
Scientists had been tracking Pavlik, even as he traversed large areas and crossed into China swimming across the Amur River and Bureya Reservoir.
Pavlik and his sister, Elena, had been freed into the wild in May 2018 after having been rescued in early February. The cubs and their mother had been hunting pet dogs when they were captured.
The governor of the Vasily Orlov area where the remains of Pavlik’s body was discovered was extremely distressed and promised the most severe punishment for those responsible. If found guilty, the poachers could face up to four years in prison.
Rest in peace Pavlik. Humans can be despicable.
