In Oklahoma City, a dog owner is facing animal cruelty charges for choking and beating his dog in what witnesses have called a horrifying case of cruelty. One woman, on her way home from work, videoed the abuse on her cellphone and was able to turn the disturbing video over to police as evidence.
According to KforNews, Lyle Benavides, 40, was seen dragging a dog with a choke collar and subsequently repeatedly hitting the animal and lifting it off the ground by its collar. He then “slammed it to the concrete several times.” Another witness told police, Benavides punched the dog, named Zephyr, with his closed fist in the face, neck and head.
Oklahoma City Police Officer Megan Morgan responded to the call and found the dog, whose injuries were consistent with what the witnesses reported. When Officer Morgan approached the dog, he cowered down in fear. Benavides told the officer he and his dog had been out for a run when the dog wouldn’t keep up, and so he pulled his dog along.
The dog was transferred to the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare where he has been treated for his injuries and despite being afraid, is expected to make a full recovery.
Benavides faces two counts of animal cruelty. He has not surrendered the dog, but if convicted the dog will be made available for adoption.
