A Round Rock, Texas man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities state he tortured his Chihuahua mix named Woogie because the dog didn’t like baths and was “being combative.” Police arrested Denton Hodne, 53, and charged him with a third degree felony for cruelty to a non livestock animal.
According to CbsAustin, the disturbing incident occurred at the Wingate Hotel. Authorities were notified after occupants in one of the other hotel rooms heard “what appeared to be an animal being tortured.” As police arrived, they could hear loud thuds, and whines and cries of an animal. After Hodne allowed police to enter his room, Woogie was found on the floor bleeding and wrapped in a towel. The dog was rushed to a veterinarian where he was treated for hemorrhaging in his eyes “consistent with choking or significant trauma to the head region.” Hodne told police he had been “whooping” his dog with an open hand on its rear end.
An affidavit estimates Woogie endured “abuse and torture” for at least eight minutes. The dog is now under protective custody.
Hodne also faces a second degree felony involving methamphetamine. In addition there were syringes containing heroin. His bond has been set at $75,000.
