In Pompano Beach, Florida, a woman has been accused of tormenting puppies she had stuffed into her backpack and then slammed them against tables and benches at a bar. On Sunday, Teresa Gardner, 27, was charged with animal cruelty, tormenting puppies and resisting arrest.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the report states Gardner had been “swinging the backpack around wildly” inside of the Briny Irish Pub; witnesses saw her throwing the bag on the tables and benches. The Chihuahua puppies, just four-weeks-old, were rescued but “tormented and deprived” of oxygen while in the tightly sealed backpack.

The puppies and their mother have all been taken to the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Department. At this time, the puppies are too young to be adopted, but will be cared for until all are ready to find homes.

Gardner has been booked into the county jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.
