In Carbon Hill, Alabama, three children aged 12, 13, and 17 have been accused of stealing and abusing a three-month-old puppy. On June 27, the juveniles were reported to have beaten the puppy and then attempted to drown it. Although the puppy named Jocko was rescued, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later and died.
According to the Mountain Eagle, Police Chief Jason Hare released a statement about the disturbing event:
“The Carbon Hill Police Department has arrested three juveniles in a cruelty to animals case where a dog was beaten and a drowning was attempted (with the dog as the victim). The dog was rescued but died at a later date. The Carbon Hill Police Department and the citizens of Carbon Hill will not tolerate this type of behavior. If anyone chooses to participate in this type of behavior, they will be charged and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Authorities state there was no motive for the crime nor did the youths know the dog’s owner. The kids allegedly stole the puppy from the backyard of a nearby home after they broke through a fence. They then brought the pup to the Carbon Hill pool where lifeguards told them to return the puppy back home.
“Then they proceeded to the creek behind the swimming pool, and that is where they beat the dog and tried to drown the dog,” Chief Hare stated. “What happened was the lifeguards heard the dog screaming, so they went down there to check it out to see what was going on. As they were walking down, I guess the kids heard them coming and took off running. They left the dog wrapped in a shirt. The dog was alive, but the dog passed away a couple of days later.”
The juveniles were taken to the Walker County Juvenile Detention Center; one teen has been charged with theft of property and the other two have been charged with animal cruelty.
