Just days after a viral video showed an Austin man appearing to abuse his dog on the outside deck of a downtown apartment complex last Saturday night, the suspect has been arrested.
John Kaschak was arrested on Thursday, February 12, and faces a third-degree felony charge of animal cruelty.

An investigation began last weekend when a video circulated on social media showing a dog being abused on the outside deck of the apartment complex. The video had been recorded by a neighbor which showed a man hitting the dog with a belt and jamming the dog into the corner of the patio with furniture.
The video, which immediately went viral after being posted on Reddit, initially showed the frustration as the witness claimed nothing was being done to help the dog.
Kaschak’s former employer, American Ventures, has since confirmed on LinkedIn that he was terminated following the incident, stating the behavior was “deeply disturbing and unacceptable”. He remains in the Travis County Jail as of Friday, February 13.
When examined by veterinarians the dog was stated to be in satisfactory condition.

The senior dog, a Blue Lacy named Boone was seized and remains in protective custody at Austin Animal Services.
