Who would ever think that these beautiful young dogs could have been abandoned on a residential street in Downey, California? Four puppies, clinging to each other and staying close together, because they were scared. Four puppies, who waited on the same street corner where they were more than likely abandoned, hoping their owner would return.

When compassionate neighbors spotted the dogs, they tried to help, but the little ones were so terrified, they would not let anyone even get close to them. Each time anyone approached, they would run away, but sadly, some people began chasing them, which only pushed them closer into the street where two of them were nearly struck by cars.

All four of them were matted, dirty and smelled as if they had never had a bath. One of the young dogs appeared to be heavily pregnant – her puppies might be born at anytime.

It was Suzette Hall, founder of the nonprofit animal rescue, Logan’s Legacy 29 who arrived at the location where the dogs were first spotted, but they were gone! Suzette’s heart sank thinking of all the terrible consequences the dogs may have encountered, but after driving through the other side streets, there they were …

All four of the dogs had been so hungry, and there they were; sniffing around trash cans and desperately trying to quell the hunger pains in their stomachs. They were hungry, thirsty and close to overheating.

Suzette had only brought one trap, but another Logan’s Legacy Rescue volunteer had met her at the location, and with one of the neighbors, it was time to rescue them and provide the help and care they had been deprived of by their previous owner. More than likely, the dogs had been the innocent product of backyard breeding, and as they grew up and buyers could not be procured, they were no longer profit makers and subsequently dumped in a nearby neighborhood to fend for themselves.

The first puppy went into the trap quickly. The others took time. The women used baby gates and food, moving slowly, gently and patiently. One by one, slip leads were secured. One by one, they were safe.
And finally, all together, into the trap.
Poor, precious babies. I looked at them and promised, We will figure it all out. We will get you everything you need.
You are loved.
You are not forgotten.
You are rescued.
There have been different opinions as to the breed of the dogs. Some commenters have said they look like ShihTzus, but they seem to fit more with the Havanese breed. The dogs are known for their silky, long coats and sociable natures. They are intelligent, trainable and bond closely with their families.
