In New Kent County, Virginia, a pregnant dog continues to fight for her life after she was discovered in a cable snare trap causing her head to swell nearly twice its size and endangering the lives of her unborn puppies.

On Monday, January 19, the dog now dubbed Maude, was found near a local intersection near New Kent Highway. The dog had been spotted over the weekend, but no one could find her. Witnesses had seen a metal wire wrapped tightly around her neck which had caused serious head swelling and making it difficult for the dog to even breathe.

During the initial investigation by the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office’s Animal Protection Unit,

…wire caused a disgusting amount of damage putting both her and her puppies lives in jeopardy.

It is believed Maude got caught in a cable snare trap which is used to trap wildlife. The trap tightens like a zip tie as the animal struggles to get free. When found she was in a lot of pain. Maude was rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital.

Maude remains hospitalized and although she is improving, still has an uphill battle. She may have suffered with the cable around her neck for weeks, and the pain she had to endure was truly heartbreaking.

The New Kent Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help for information. Someone knows where this trap came from, and someone may know who Maude belonged to. Anyone with information is asked to call 804.966.9500.

Maude continues to fight for her life. Thank you to everyone who has reached out, shared her story, and supported her during this incredibly difficult time.

Maude’s veterinarian expenses were expected to reach $10,000 and a donation link was set up through the New Kent Sheriff’s Office Animal Protection.

The community has overwhelmingly supported Maude’s recovery:

Thank you SOOOOO much to everyone who has donated! We have reached our goal and even have extra for any future medical expenses Maude may have. She is quite literally.. covered for life!! The support from our New Kent community, Virginia community, and across America has been insane!!
