Astrid isn’t just another stray who arrived earlier this week at the Herkimer County Humane Society in Mohawk, New York. She was a most loyal dog who didn’t want to leave her owner’s side.

When rescued on Tuesday, the nine-year-old German shepherd had been discovered by authorities lying next to her deceased owner. No one knows how long she had been there, but she weighed only 28 pounds; with no food to be found and not expecting anyone to come to her aid.

When she arrived at the rescue organization, she had been without food for so long, her refeeding plan developed by the veterinary staff, had to be ordered and administered very slowly.

Her first nights at the hospital provided her with the veterinary care she needed to stabilize her condition. Astrid had been so very close to dying.

And now days later, Astrid is slowly making progress. She is being fostered by the shelter manager and gently being nursed back to health. She eats very small meals several times a day; each bite makes her feel a bit stronger, although she has an uphill road to regain her health.

Sitting up at night making sure they make it through.
Bringing them into our homes when a kennel isn’t enough.
Fighting for them when they can’t fight for themselves.
Astrid is tired and weak, but she is safe. No doubt she is grieving for her human. Some dogs just pull at our hearts. Astrid is one of those dogs.
