Less than a week ago, the Kentucky Humane Society welcomed a very pregnant one-year-old beagle, who had been transferred from another shelter to the specialized Sam Swope Pet Treatment and Lifesaving Center.

The organization’s veterinarian, Dr. Bewley named the dog Winnie the Pooch and because the dog weighed only 23 pounds and had been carrying three very large puppies, offered to foster her until she gave birth.
On Monday evening, Winnie went into labor, and Dr. Bewley stayed by her side to monitor her progress. Hours of contractions went by, and still there were no puppies born; it was time for the medical team to help Winnie give birth.

Late that night, the vet team rushed to the shelter and performed an emergency C-section on Winnie. And 20 minutes later, three large puppies were born. The staff rubbed each puppy to keep them all warm, removed the sacs and helped them take their first breaths.

Winnie is now the proud mother of two male puppies and one female. All is going well with nursing, and everyone is getting to know each other as Dr. Bewley makes sure everyone is well cared for and loved.
We’re simply grateful that we were able to give Winnie the safe delivery and fresh start that she deserves.
Happy occasions like Winnie and her puppies happen with loyal fans and followers generously donating to help with expenses. The puppies, now named Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet are thriving, and that’s because so many people care.

ALL donations made at kyhumane.org/donate through April 15 – up to $15,000 – are being matched, which means your gift today will DOUBLE to support TWICE as many expecting mamas and their babies!
Together, we can be there for canine families who have nowhere else to turn.
