On Monday evening, calls from nearby concerned residents contacted Newton Animal Control in New Jersey about abandoned puppies and dogs of all ages having been abandoned in an open crate near the entrance of Swartswood State Park by Duck Pond Trail in Stillwater. At the time, there had been isolated tornado warnings, as heavy rains poured throughout the area.
They were all in a dog crate and the dumper put the crate off the road onto one of the trails and opened the door and let them all run free.
Stillwater Area Volunteer Fire Company arrived in the Swartswood section of town. Using thermal imaging cameras in conjunction with the help of the Newton Animal Control, heat traps were set up along the trail and were able to capture eight loose dogs

Apparently, more than 20 dogs had been abandoned across three local towns. Authorities say 16 or more dogs have been captured, and two of them are currently under veterinarian care. Either the dogs had been struck by a car or thrown out of a moving vehicle.

The dogs that have been captured so far are older dogs and are Jack Russell mixes, miniature pinschers and chihuahuas.

Early Tuesday morning, five more dogs of various ages had been safely captured, according to an update from Newton Animal Control.

If anyone has any sightings or any information regarding these dogs, please call the Newton Police Department immediately at 973-383-2525. Please do not chase.

In addition anyone who may have witnessed these incidents or has information related to the dogs or the individual(s) responsible is asked to contact the Troop ‘B’ Sussex Station at 973-383-1514 or the Sussex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers at 973-300-CRIME.
