Heartbreaking rescue of bird dyed pink for gender reveal party reveals cruelty of such selfish act

At the Napa Wildlife Rescue in Napa, California, the staff and volunteers alike are heartbroken after a bird was rescued after having been dyed for a gender reveal celebration this week.

If anyone is even considering using birds dyed to correspond with the future birth of their child celebration, please know that toxic fumes compromise their lungs, and they ingest poisons from the dyes as they preen their feathers.

The birds used are generally domestic king pigeons, which have been bred to be small, white, and docile. They lack the survival skills, foraging ability and stamina needed to survive in the wild. Still, parties are planned and celebrated to ignorantly rejoice in the suffering of these innocent bird victims.

And as if that doesn’t add to their misery and painful demise, these birds are often rejected by their flocks and because of the brightness of the pink and blue colors, they become more vulnerable to prey.

There are so many alternatives for a celebration of life, we don’t need to hurt animals along the way. Instead of using live animals, people are encouraged to use cruelty-free options for gender reveals, such as:

Balloon pops (do not release balloons)

Confetti canons (biodegradable)

Colored smoke bombs

Bake a cake with either blue or pink

Be kind.
