At the Craven County Sheriff’s Office in New Bern, North Carolina, a new K-9 officer was officially welcomed on Friday.

Welcome K-9 Officer Vex who went from unwanted to unforgettable. Read on; her story will make your heart smile – we promise.
On August 18, 2025, Craven County Animal Protective Services (APS) Bureau discovered a Malinois, now known as Vex, tethered without access to basic necessities including shelter, food and water on Taylor Road in the Harlowe Community of Craven County.
Three dogs located on the property were seized. The owner later surrendered the dogs after pleading guilty to multiple counts of animal neglect.

“Following a failure to comply with county ordinances and a history of similar offenses, the homeowner was charged with three counts of animal cruelty and two counts of failure to vaccinate and subsequently found guilty.”
K-9 Vex underwent a thorough evaluation by K-9 Reflection and the Craven County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Bureau, where the dog demonstrated all the exceptional qualities needed for law enforcement. And so her training commenced.

And now … drum roll please …
We are pleased to announce that the former victim is now a K-9 Deputy completing K-9 handler school with Deputy Barnett, preparing to patrol the same streets where K-9 Vex was once neglected.
Vex has officially joined the Craven County Sheriff’s K9 unit where she will work for detection and tracking.
