On Friday, March 20, the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control issued a press release referencing a warrant issued for an animal welfare violation in what the organization called its largest animal seizure operation.

By 7:00 a.m. a search warrant had been served in the 46000 block of 266th Street West in Lake Hughes, California. The animals reportedly were in the custody of Christine De Anda of “Rock N Paws Animal Rescue”.

It had been estimated 400 dogs and 300 cats had been on the premises and were scheduled to be removed. Fortunately the number of cats and dogs were not as high as expected.

In an update from the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control late Friday afternoon, approximately 250 dogs and 66 cats were seized and receiving care as a result of the rescue operation. A massive coordinated effort continues to bring the animals to safety.

We are deeply grateful to our partners who stood alongside us today: our District Attorney investigators, Pasadena Humane, spcaLA, and Kern County Animal Services. Your expertise and collaboration were critical in this response.

Thank you to Greater Good Charities for mobilizing a lifesaving flight yesterday, helping create much-needed space ahead of today’s intake.

Marcia Mayeda, director of the DACC, is requesting the public’s help to support the rescue and rehabilitation of the animals – either through adoption or donations to the Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation.

According to social media, no charges have been filed, and the owners of the rescue have been cooperating with authorities. In addition, many reports and photos provided posted on social media, show the animals looking healthy.

Rock N Paws Animal Rescue did have staff and volunteers present when LADACC arrived. Previous complaints posted on social media alleged neighbors had filed claims of animal neglect and abuse because they were disturbed by the barking.

More updates to follow. Please, if you are able to adopt and/or foster, contact the Los Angeles Animal Care & Control.
