Family surrendered dog to shelter after dressing him up in hoodie

Ninja’s owners dressed him in a hoodie, as if the cute outfit would make it easier for their family dog to survive in an overcrowded animal shelter after they surrendered him. His owners told the shelter they could no longer afford his dog.

Sadly, “Owner Surrender” was the last thing Ninja heard on December 27, and now he’s scheduled to die next week. Was the hoodie meant to supply the dog named Ninja a little warmth to replace the home where he lived? We can only assume the hoodie was supposed to protect Ninja from being pushed into a noisy kennel with just a few days left until his time to see another sunrise would be over?

Ninja lived with one 13-year-old child and three adults. He is friendly with strangers and children, however with other dogs, he has been known to bark, growl and lunge. He was also described as social, affectionate, playful, vocal and independent.

Ninja displays resource guarding; he values food, toys, and treats. He guards these items by growling, barking and snapping. Because of his behavior description, Ninja’s adoption is limited to an approved New Hope rescue organization.

Ninja is five years old and weighs 17 pounds. He is partially housetrained.

Shelter observations:

Summary: 01/12/25: Ninja is lying down in the back of his kennel and walks to the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He is picked up, placed on the floor, and escorted to the office for enrichment. Once inside, Ninja explores the room and engages with a snuffle mat, eating treats until the session concludes. Ninja is then escorted back to his kennel safely without any issues.

What a difference from one of his previous observations:

Summary: 12/30/25: Ninja was pacing the front of his kennel, hard barking and growling as a staff member was near his kennel door during their rounds.

Additional information as supplied by the shelter:

“Ninja has displayed fear-based and defensive behaviors in the care center, particularly within his kennel. He has been observed pacing, hard barking, and growling when staff are nearby, indicating discomfort with proximity and kennel-related stress. During handling, Ninja can be tense but has allowed leashing, being picked up with towel support, and collaring when approached slowly. Outside of the kennel environment, he is able to walk, relieve himself, and settle without incident. Ninja would benefit from a calm, experienced home that can provide predictable routines, low-pressure handling, and continued positive associations to help reduce fear. Ninja is available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.”

He is currently at Queens Animal Care Center located at 1906 Flushing Avenue in Queens, New York.
