Dozens of Great Pyrenees rescued from hoarding situation in San Juan county

For nine months, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office had been receiving complaints about an excessive number of dogs at a single property in Bloomfield, New Mexico.

Earlier in January, the animal hoarding case that involved out of state rescue organizations, celebrity donations and veterinary teams arrived at the property to rescue 90 Great Pyrenees.

Because of the number of dogs and puppies involved in the case, careful planning developed using different rescue organizations stepping forward to help. The first 65 dogs were transported to the Denkai Animal Sanctuary in Durango.

Over the past month, Denkai, alongside other local rescue organizations, have been working nonstop to build safe housing and holding areas for a very large group of Great Pyrenees dogs. Their veterinary clinic has also been working tirelessly to ensure each dog receives the care they need, including spay and neuter, vaccinations, medical treatment, and overall wellness care.

In total, approximately 65 dogs have come from the same location. Despite where they came from, these dogs have proven to be sweet, gentle, and truly wonderful. Several are now fully vetted and ready to move into homes.

Twenty-five dogs have been sent to other partner organizations including the Great Pyrenees Rescue Resources Utah Montana.

Many of the dogs have not been socialized. According to sheriff reports, the owner is not being charged with animal cruelty. He was not breeding the dogs for profit, and told officials he had taken in a few stray dogs years before and none of the dogs had never been spayed or neutered.

Many of the dogs suffer from inbreeding due to not being spayed or neutered, leading to various health issues, including lupus and heartworm. All dogs have since been spayed or neutered and tested for parvo.

The rescue organizations want those interested in adopting to know these dogs will take work which includes time, patience, structure and committed people.

Country singer Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation Foundation donated $45,000 to help cover the veteriary and rehabilitation costs for the dogs.

For additional information and resources about fostering, volunteering or adopting, here are the organizations involved in the rescue of the dogs:
