Breeder surrendered Clumber spaniel ready for real home with real people

It had been on March 24, when a retiring local breeder near Minot, North Dakota, surrendered 25 dogs living in rough conditions. Six of the dogs were Clumber spaniels, and four of the dogs were welcomed to Belle’s Sake Rescue/Rehabilitation.

The dogs arrived covered in urine and feces; their coats were severely matted, and the dogs were generally overwhelmed of their new surroundings. Just the drive back to the rescue had been enough to make everyone in the vehicle eyes burn and heads pound. One can only imagine how it must have felt for the dogs having had to live in that environment day after day.

The dogs had to learn that being touched by human hands could be enjoyable and that life can be better. They would soon experience wide open spaces, and that expanse would allow the dogs to run. They all needed to be groomed, bathed and vetted. And then came the patience, care and time.

If you are not familiar with Clumber spaniels, these beautiful large, heavy-boned hunting dogs are known for being gentle, loyal and affectionate with their families.

The breed is characterized by their white coats with orange or yellow markings. They are intelligent but also can be quite stubborn, with males weighing 70 to 80 pounds and females weighing 55 to 70 pounds.

Meet Nellie. She is quite the lady:

Exhibit A: the paws.

Crossed. Delicate. Intentional.

As if she has somewhere important to be (she does not).

Exhibit B: the posture.

Graceful. Composed.

Absolutely ignoring the fact that she is sitting in… dirt.

i may be outside. I may be slightly dusty, but i will not be uncivilized.

Needless to say, Nellie is elegant.

Nellie is doing very well keeping her living areas clean as she learns she has potty breaks often

Leash skills are less mastered than her cleanliness. A fenced yard would be desirable.
