Meet Astoria; she is a hermaphrodite dog who is also referred to as an intersex dog. The dog’s rare congenital condition means she has both male and female reproductive organs. She arrived at the Pima Animal Care Center in Tucson as a stray.

No doubt, Astoria is unique. She was very scared in her kennel, and it was heartbreaking to see. Luckily, once out in the yard, the one-year-old started to feel better and showed her natural puppy curiosity. She’s young and is the perfect size.
Not much is known about her because she came in as a stray, but she did her business as soon as she came in the yard so she might be housebroken.

A volunteer working with Astoria commented:
I’ve been working with her, and she’s making progress! She was acting like a puppy, bouncing around and enjoyed being petted. She was still skittish at times, but great improvement!
Treatment often involves surgery to correct the anatomy and neutering to prevent future complications. After surgery, the dog’s vet will guide the family on how to manage any ongoing issues to ensure Astoria lives a wonderful life.
Please share her story with friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.
