Remember Timber? Update on emaciated shepherd that crawled into bushy area after life of utter neglect

At the end of July 2025, a plea had gone out to all area animal rescue organizations in Beaufort, South Carolina, asking for help with five-year-old Timber, a shepherd/husky mix, who had mustered up all of his strength to crawl into a bush next to a home to rest.

Realizing the dog needed emergency treatment, Noah’s Ark Rescue  stepped up and offered their assistance.

Timber had been found less than half a mile from I-95; it was assumed at the time he had been struck and injured by a car. How he even had been able to walk remained a mystery, but there he was and appeared to be on an uphill battle to survive.

X-rays had not revealed any broken bones, indicating he had not been hit by a car, but instead had been a victim of severe neglect and abused.

For months, Timber’s recovery has been compared to a roller coaster ride. After he had been released from the hospital, he was moved to the rescue organization’s rehabilitation facility in Okatie, South Carolina.

But enough of the struggles; onto the good news. It is now December and as the holidays approach, Timber’s recovery progress should definitely be tied with a giant red bow.

This resilient pup has made amazing progress. He has regained most of the weight he lost during his hospital stay. The prolonged regimen of antibiotics have had no residual effects. He has worked past any swelling of fluid retention that had hindered his recovery.

Timber’s personality is his usual cheerful self. He does seem a bit cautious with new people right now, which is understandable after such a long hospital stay. At the moment, he is completely obsessed with gathering as many stuffed toys as he can fit into his kennel. He piles them up, buries his face in them, and falls asleep surrounded by his treasures. He almost always has one proudly carried in his mouth.

As we celebrate Timber, please know that Noah’s Ark Rescue has since taken in four new dogs; each dog critical in their own way. Two of the dogs have already undergone surgery, and the two other are in ICU awaiting their procedures.

During this holiday season, please reach out to individuals who do not have the means or ability to care for their pets. Please be kind and offer help; perhaps help them feed their pets, supply them with warming supplies for these cold winter days and nights, or offer a kind word and a hug.
