In Indianapolis, a German shepherd who had been abandoned in a hot car where temperatures soared more than 90 degrees on June 20, has been adopted by one of the officers who rescued her.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Northwest District Facebook post, the dog named Abby, had been one of three pets left inside of a vehicle found at the Intown Suites Hotel. The windows of the vehicle had been barely open; no air-conditioning had been left on in the car.
Hotel staff told police the car had been left in the parking lot for nearly three hours, and the only clue that animals had been in the vehicle alerted employees is when Abby honked the horn from inside of the vehicle.

A pit bull mix dog named Masus died in the car before police could rescue him. He was found with a chain and weight around his neck tied to the floorboard. A cat found in the vehicle was also rescued, although no details have been provided as to the animal’s condition.
It had been IMPD Officer Poe who arrived as one of the numerous officers rushing to save the animals abandoned in the hot vehicle. Abby and the cat were transferred to the Indianapolis Animal Care Services. Officer Poe went to the shelter on Friday, and Abby has been adopted and being given her “second chance at life.”
Well, we are happy to announce that PSO Poe has adopted the German Shepherd, Abby! Abby is already at her new FURever home and is in great hands. PSO Poe mentioned, “I switched her collar, and it was like Abby knew she was home for good”

The people who left the pets in the vehicle have been arrested. A 53-year-old man, Charles Thomas, and a 74-year-old woman, Norma Light, were arrested on Thursday. Light said she left the animals in the car because the motel was not pet friendly. Thomas faces a charge of felony animal cruelty-kill and Light was arrested for misdemeanor animal cruelty. Both were taken to the Marion County jail.
