In Orlando, Luna, a nine-year-old friendly shepherd is currently in the clinic at the Orlando, Florida shelter after she was surrendered by her owner during an emergency cruelty confiscation case on Wednesday evening.

Luna needs a rescuer today, and if her condition declines, she will be euthanized to prevent additional suffering.

Here’s her heartbreaking story:

Orange County Animal Services received an anonymous report about a dog in poor condition with a leg injury that occurred more than a month ago. The dog’s owner told the officer he didn’t know how his dog Luna had been hurt, and said he had been bringing the dog home from the park when he noticed blood on the car seat and found she had a cut on her leg. He cleaned the wound, but it became infected, at which time he told the officer he took the dog to the vet after about a month. The vet gave the owner antibiotics and pain killers, but stated the dog needed to have her leg amputated.

I explained why I was there and he stated his dog does have an injured leg and that he has been saving up money for amputation. He then showed me Luna (A544875) who was lying on a bed with very little movement.

Luna was lifting her head but moving very little otherwise. From several feet away I could smell the infection and I observed several flies in the room

The vet had given the owner a quote of $2,000 for the operation, and the man said he had been saving ever since. The owner surrendered the dog after the officer told him this would become a cruelty investigation. A citation was issued V24-447690 for neglect and failure to provide proof of current rabies vaccine.

Luna was then transported to Lake Underhill Veterinarians. She is currently receiving IV catheter with bandaging on right hind leg. It is severely degloved and infected. She is unable to bear weight on her right front leg.

recommend consider transfer to rescue for medical management vs amputation, transfer to full service practice for amputation vs humane euthanasia due to the severity of the wounds…
