Move over, Lassie! The canine crown for longevity goes to Cooper, a spirited poodle mix from North Carolina, who recently celebrated his 23rd birthday, making him not just a senior citizen in the dog world, but one of the oldest documented pooches in the United States.

Cooper’s tale is a heartwarming testament to resilience and love. The senior ended up at the Young At Heart Senior Pet Adoptions last year when his owner unexpectedly died. At first, he was made available for adoption, but the shelter’s founder, Dawn Kemper, decided the “happy, demanding, feisty old pup” would do best at the shelter because of his age and his medical issues which can be carefully monitored daily and at one of the staff member’s home.

Just four days ago, Cooper celebrated his amazing milestone of 23. His day began with his soupy breakfast; he has no teeth, but what the heck?

He trusts us implicitty, which allows us to provide him with anything he needs in his golden years. It’s an absolute privilege and joy to care for Cooper.

TikTok

News of Cooper’s remarkable age has taken the internet by storm. Videos showcasing that slight hitch in his walk, yet that never stops him from wanting to go outdoors and explore. At times his playful spirit shines through, and he even gathers up steam to trot around a bit.

It reminds us that with proper care and attention, our furry friends can lead long and fulfilling lives. More importantly, it highlights the immense potential of adopting senior dogs – creatures overflowing with love and companionship, ready to share their wisdom and fill your life with joy.

One whole year after being rescued, Cooper has a lot to celebrate.

1. Going viral on #tiktok
2. Getting a painful eye removed
3. Being able to be carried a couple steps across the parking lot to the on-site vet whenever he needs it
4. Becoming a #yah_sanctuary dog so that a whole organization of people is always looking out for him
5. Getting a second chance to live his best life in his 20’s!!

And so much more!

Coop had a fantastic day spent with his human and canine friends, even if he slept through a lot of it.
