In Westampton, New Jersey, at the Burlington County Animal Shelter, one resident dog had captured the hearts of staff and volunteers alike. Chief, a 10-year-old senior pit bull terrier mix, had earned the affectionate nickname, “the most loving senior dog” thanks to his sweet demeanor and boundless affection.
Chief arrived at the shelter in June 2021 after his previous owner could no longer care for him. His original owner then returned and adopted him again, but had to surrender Chief back to the shelter the next year. Chief’s spirit and enthusiasm had remained youthful. He was playful and energetic, always eager for a game of fetch or a belly rub. But it’s his gentle, loving nature that truly set him apart.
More than a year ago, the shelter continued to reach out to social media hoping someone would see his pretty face and want to make him part of their family:

Chief had been described as the kind of dog who could melt your heart the moment you met him. According to volunteers at the shelter, this boy is always happy to see everyone and loves to give kisses.
Chief’s story resonated with animal lovers across the country after a local news report dubbed him “the most loving senior dog.” And then again, his named inspired a bit of incentive to be featured as the Super Bowl gained momentum. The shelter had been inundated with inquiries about Chief, with many potential adopters drawn to his heartwarming story and endearing personality.
And then it happened… Chief found love when a woman decided to adopt him at a Super Bowl-themed event, according to the shelter’s Feb. 13 Facebook post. The Williamstown resident came to meet Chief to express her interest and then adopted him.
Our Board was rooting for Chief to find his forever home on Sunday, and we were thrilled to learn that he was adopted by someone who was willing to open up her home and her heart to this lovable dog.
