At the Humane Society of Greater Niagara located in Ontario, Canada, a much loved and cherished dog has been reunited with his owner after 750 days. The two, who had been closely bonded for years, had to be separated after the dog’s owner had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and would be unable to care for his beloved dog.
Minnie had stayed by her owner’s side; she had been his loyal protector, but when the time came, and her human couldn’t leave his bed for more than 36 hours while being treated, Minnie still stayed loyally by his side. She was the man’s source of comfort, but as the man’s treatment continued, his health deteriorated. It was time for him to make that heart wrenching decision to find someone who could take care of Minnie.

- In October 2022, Minnie arrived at the Humane Society of Greater Niagara. PetSmart Charities had volunteered to help Minnie through their humanitarian boarding program. What would have been a great idea and Minnie would be able to reunite with her owner when the man completed his treatment, didn’t go as planned.
Sadly, her human’s condition worsened, and he agreed to surrender Minnie; wanting to give her a better life. For the first time, Minnie and her human were separated.
Even while her owner fought through the treatments, he thought about his dog everyday. He carried her dog tags in his wallet and visited the shelter just to catch a glimpse of her from a far.
For years, Minnie watched the other dogs get adopted, but people seemed to have passed her by. When it was finally a wrap, and Minnie was adopted, sadly the dynamics of her new family and home didn’t work out, through no fault of her own, but Minnie was returned to the shelter. The staff and volunteers loved Minnie and made sure she had plenty of attention, adventures and lots of hugs and kisses.

And then fate stepped in, and it was positive news! In August, the man was told he was in remission. And what do you think was his first thought? Of course – Minnie. He went to the shelter’s website, and there she was – her face looked back at her human. The man’s eyes filled with tears, and he started to prepare to move into his new home with a big backyard and planning every detail for Minnie’s return.
It had been 750 days, and now Minnie is back, and the two are together.
Many thanks to Pet Smart Charities, Humane Society of Greater Niagara and the staff and volunteers who have cared for Minnie – making these moments and new memories possible.
