In San Antonio, a man was arrested after allegedly stabbing a dog with a box cutter according to Animal Care Services and San Antonio police.

The press release from the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services stated John Christopher Schafer, 28, was arrested on Thursday on a third degree felony animal cruelty to non livestock animals with the intention to torture or kill. Bond was set at $25,000. The charge could be upgraded to torture pending further investigations.

The charges of torture stemmed from an incident on April 27th at a home in the 200 block of Coopwood. Officers were dispatched to the home for a disturbance where the suspect allegedly threatened to kill the family dog before stabbing the animal. He had been in an argument with his girlfriend on the phone as the situation escalated.

I’m going to start killing dogs.

It was at that point Schafer used a box cutter to stab the dog in the neck.

The dog, a young male American Staffordshire terrier, was brought into the Animal Care Services Veterinary Clinic with a deep puncture in the left side of his neck. After extensive treatment, the dog, now named Zander, was fostered by a pair of ACS officers until he found an adoptive home where he currently lives with several other animal companions.

Animal Cruelty-Torture is a felony punishable by up to ten years in jail and a possible fine of up to $10,000. The San Antonio Police Department and Animal Care Services regularly work together to protect people and pets in our community.
