In Baltimore, a service dog named Bailey cried for his owner after the man was rushed to the hospital in “extremely critical condition.” On Monday, Engines 50 and Medic 10 transported the person to the hospital, and subsequently learned the dog had been left behind crying for his owner.

Bailey jumped into the back of one of the vehicles when called and cried while looking for his owner.

Bailey was allowed to accompany his owner into the hospital, and a crew member from Engine 50 stayed with the dog while waiting for word about his owner’s condition. The hospital staff was able to find a place where the dog could be safely kept and attended to while arrangements were being made for his care.

Maryland EMS protocols have recently been updated to ensure certified service animals are also cared for as well as their humans.

Updates to follow.
