A Spanish Greyhound named Braveheart arrived at the Galgos del Sol shelter in Spain and couldn’t stop shivering in fear. It was barely a week ago when he was rescued, and social media was overtaken with tears to see a dog in such a terrified state.

According to Newsweek, Braveheart had been a stray living a very rough life. Rescuers set a humane trap baited with food for him in the area he had been scavenging to exist and patiently waited until he entered the trap.

After Braveheart’s video was posted on both TikTok and Facebook, there was an outpouring of love and concern. Sadly, it is not unusual for dogs to be this frightened when arriving at shelters. They are faced with unknown people handling them, endless barking and yelping from other shelter dogs, metal plates and bowls clanging and no way to help these dogs understand their owners are no longer there for them.

Fortunately, for Braveheart, a follow-up video showed him calming down and even wagging his tail.

Sadly, this breed is often mistreated and neglected.

The Galgo, or Spanish Greyhound, is a breed that has been historically used for hunting hares in the Spanish countryside. Sadly, according to the Galgos del Sol shelter’s website, they can be subjected to inhumane treatment, including being kept in poor conditions and fed inadequately.

  2. Braveheart is one of the lucky ones, at least his own set him free. Galgos are as common as our pit bulls. Usually at the end of hunting and racing season the owner hangs them to a tree or fence. Some owners are cruel and hang the dog where just their toes touch the ground so they choke to death, slowly.
There are now many Galgo Rescue groups working hard to stop Galgo abuse but you know Spain still has bull fights. People should know about the cruelty done to these beautiful souls.
There is a town in Spain with a statue dedicated to the Galgos. They put it up to stop the deaths in their town. I hope it is working. I am sure it offends the hunters and the dog racers and I hope it does offend them because they offend me.
