On Monday, an unexpected call was received by the Pennsylvania SPCA from the Blue Pearl Emergency Veterinarian Hospital in Philadelphia, describing a dog they believed had been suffering from a drug overdose.

The tiny poodle, named Toodles had been rushed to Blue Pearl in Philadelphia by Good Samaritans who found the dog alongside of a person in the Kensington area; both the person and the dog had been unconscious and unresponsive.

The Philadelphia Police Department responded to the scene to care for the unconscious person, while the Good Samaritans responded to helping the dog.

The owner of Toodles had been taking drugs himself, and, according to witnesses had been “sharing” his drugs with the dog. Based on that knowledge and the symptoms the dog had been exhibiting, the veterinarians at Blue Pearl administered Narcan, and the dog immediately became responsive.

It is unimaginable what would have happened if Toodles hadn’t been taken to a veterinarian. But, thanks to the quick work of the Good Samaritans, and the lifesaving work of Blue Pearl, Toodles is alive today.

The Animal Law Enforcement team is currently investigating this disturbing case. Toodles had been turned over to the hospital where he has since been transferred to the care of the Pennsylvania SPCA. Toodles has been placed on an IV and is being monitored closely.

We are happy to report that Toodles is expected to make a full recovery, and volunteers and staff say he is absolutely the sweetest pup ever! Everyone loves him, but to think he could have died from such neglect and abuse.

Get well soon Toodles. We just know you will soon find the perfect home!
