No more chances for this little stressed pup’s behavior and urgent rescue needed

Meet Xavi; he is a year-and-a-half little terrier mix, weighing eight-pounds, who must be out of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control by Thursday, September 14, or he will be euthanized. His story is heartbreaking.

According to shelter information, Xavi originally arrived at the shelter as a stray in March 2023 where a woman surrendered the dog after having had him for a few weeks. She claimed Xavi had bitten two people; on one occasion the bite did not break the skin, and it is not known about the other incident.

Xavi was then sent to a foster home, and shortly after that he was adopted. This month, the adopter-owner surrendered Xavi back to the shelter, stating the dog has “stranger danger” and has bitten the owner’s wife, although the skin was not broken. Xavi re-entered the shelter on September 9.

Sadly, this poor little guy has not done well. Here are his medical notes:

“Medical: Xavi is about a year and a half old and is neutered. Clinic has been unable to process him, due to his behavior. He has been started on anti-anxiety meds for signs of FAS (fear, anxiety and stress).

Behavior: Xavi is showing fearful behavior – ears back, attempting to hide behind his bed and shaking. He also repeatedly snaps at the leash, attempting to bite it. Outside, he relaxes a little but his tail is still tucked and his body is tense. It is not recommended for him to go to a home with children under 15.”

“Staff Notes: Kennel staff were able to place him in his kennel and remove his slip leash without issue. The following day, when the same member of staff entered his kennel, he gave a low growl when they tried to leash him.”

Request to Rescues: Beautiful Xavi needs urgent rescue due to his fearful behavior. Owing to his previously reported behavior and his current shelter behavior, he is not a candidate for the adoption program. He needs a rescue who can take the time to work with him on his stranger danger and he may need help from a professional trainer for behavior modification. We recommend he doesn’t go to a home with children under 15 years old.
